“When you make it there despite the conditions, you’ll experience that moment—the one that reminds you what really matters.”
One of the greatest things about living in a country like Canada is exploring all that the country’s landscape has to offer. Whether you are wandering through Halifax’s colourful waterfront community or watching the waves crash in on the shores of Sooke Park on Vancouver Island, there is no denying the beauty that makes up the Canadian landscape. And while travelling the country from coast to coast will create memories that will last a lifetime, it is important to ensure comfort and safety while doing so.
Client safety has always been a number one priority for Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG, which is why the brand has developed the innovative 4MATIC technology that is available in a number of Mercedes luxury vehicles. The 4MATIC system was first introduced by a team of Mercedes-Benz engineers at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985. The team introduced a new passenger-car all-wheel drive system that would later become known as 4MATIC. In 1987, the W124-Series (later to become the E-Class) debuted the first 4MATIC system. In 2008, the system was redesigned to achieve a weight under 200 lb. This new 4MATIC technology was used in the CL 550 Coupe. Today, the 4MATIC system is available in more than a dozen Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and SUVs in Canada and nearly 50 models worldwide.
What is 4MATIC
The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system by Mercedes-Benz creates a grip on whatever terrain you are travelling on by engaging all four wheels. There are three different variations of the 4MATIC system that have been developed to meet the unique needs of the Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG vehicle line-ups.
4MATIC All-Wheel Drive System
This new generation all-wheel drive system was designed to manage power in a fully variable way that allows for shifting between front and rear axles based on the road conditions at any given time. When conditions are standard and relatively smooth, the vehicle will use front-wheel drive only. When a driver is venturing on more challenging terrains, power is rapidly channeled to the rear axle to ensure more control. When this power to the rear axle is no longer needed, it will immediately shift back to front-wheel drive to maximize the fuel efficiency. The ability to shift power back and forth also allows vehicles equipped with 4MATIC to be much lighter than other all-wheel drive competitors.
Available on: B-Class, CLA and GLA
4MATIC Permanent All-Wheel Drive System
This version of the 4MATIC system is compact and lightweight. It is one of the best-performing systems available today. It splits power 45:55 between the front and rear axles respectively except when the system detects either axle slipping. In this case, power is immediately shifted to the axle that is spinning slower to improve traction and stability. It provides unparalleled handling on dry, wet, icy or unsurfaced roads, which are all very common in Canada’s climate and environment. The fuel efficiency is comparable to that of a conventional drive system and the compact design of the 4MATIC system allows for much more interior legroom than other rear-wheel drive models can offer.
Available on: G-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLS, GLC, GLE, GLE Coupe GL and G-Class
AMG Performance 4MATIC Permanent All-Wheel Drive System
In order to preserve the premium dynamics and pure exhilaration of driving an AMG vehicle, an entirely custom 4MATIC system was created. In this version, the driving power is distributed 33:67 between the front and rear axles respectively. This results in improved acceleration from a standing start and increased safety on slippery surfaces without compromising driving enjoyment. When conditions get extra challenging, the system ensures driver and passenger safety by getting all four tires to reach their maximum traction potential. One of the more miraculous achievements of the AMG Performance 4MATIC is its size. No additional space is needed for installation so the interior of the vehicle remains spacious. Its overall compact and lightweight design allows for reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
Available on Mercedes AMG: E 63 S, GLS 63 S, S 63, S 63 Coupe and GL 63
